Academic Trajectory & Research Interests
Dr. Stephen Brooks is a professor in the Faculty of Computer Science at Dalhousie University. He earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Cambridge in 2004, his M.Sc. from the University of British Columbia in 2000, and his B.Sc. from Brock University in 1998. Prior to Dalhousie, his research primarily investigated semi-automatic image editing, sound retargeting, and human motion synthesis. His laboratory currently investigates non-photorealistic rendering, image editing, 3D geospatial information systems, and large-scale scientific visualization.
Dr. Brooks leads an interdisciplinary research laboratory at Dalhousie University developing computational techniques that bridge mathematical geometry with human perception. Prior to arriving at Dalhousie, he worked primarily on semi-automatic image editing, but also investigated audio synthesis and human motion animation.
His current research concentrates on non-photorealistic rendering (NPR), large-scale ocean science visualization contributing to Dalhousie's nearly $400M Transforming Climate Action research consortium, 3D object cloud retrieval, and metadata embedding in polygonal meshes.
